Disaster off the coast of the Cocos Islands
On August 20 the flag ship «Ocean Warrier» belonging to the Sea Shepherd Society seized the long-line ship «San Jose» as it was caught fishing sharks, dolphins and turtles within the Cocos Islands sanctuary (approximately 500 kilometers off the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica and belonging to this country). Eyewitness reports from members of the Sea Shepherd spoke of horrific scenes as they viewed the almost 50 kilometer longlines. The «San Jose» is currently being detained in the Puntarenas seaport.
According to Elisabeth Odio, Costa Rica's Environmental Minister, this ship and its crew will be used as a warning to scare off other poachers in the national parks. The verdict is not yet known.
